In a programmatic paper, Cornelius Holtorf discusses several novel uses of cultural heritage that are increasingly important in those European societies in which the promotion of the unifying idea of a national heritage is no longer viable. Cornelius Holtorf is Professor of Archaeology and holds a UNESCO Chair on Heritage Futures at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden. He also directs the Graduate School in Contract Archaeology (GRASCA). In his research he is particularly interested in the significance of archaeology and heritage in present and future societies. Sharon Macdonald is Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Social Anthropology and Director of the Centre for Anthropological Research on Museums and Heritage (CARMAH) in the Institute of European Ethnology, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
